Staying motivated in the new year

It’s the new year and you might have set some goals/fitness resolutions in the new year for yourself – congratulations! The hardest part of this goal setting is staying motivated after the initial excitement wears off and the winter blahs set in.

But don’t worry, there are some proven strategies that can help you stay on track and achieve your fitness goals.

Set SMART goals

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Having clear and realistic goals can help you focus on your progress and celebrate your achievements.

Find a workout buddy or join a group

For example, it’s not too late to join Fort Collins Running Club‘s Running U program.  This is the start of the Horsetooth Half Marathon training program but it is geared towards anyone wanting to run with other like-minded folks.  Having someone to run with can make it more fun and motivating. You can also support each other and hold each other accountable when the alarm clock goes off on a cold morning and you would rather stay in bed.

Mix up your routine

You’ll get bored or burned out if you keep doing the same workouts day after day. Change your runs by finding new routes or adding speed intervals or hill repeats to your workouts. The Running U training sessions alternate between runs either in town or on the hills that the Horsetooth Half includes.  Or try different types of workouts, like HIIT, yoga, or weights.

Reward yourself

Give yourself a treat or a break after completing a workout or reaching a milestone. It can be something simple, like a smoothie, a movie, or a nap. Just make sure it’s something that you enjoy and that doesn’t undo your hard work.

Remind yourself of your why

Think about the reasons why you want to stay fit and healthy. Maybe it’s to improve your mood, energy, or confidence. Maybe it’s to prevent disease, reduce stress, or live longer. Whatever it is, write it down and keep it somewhere visible, like your fridge, mirror, or phone. This can help you stay focused and inspired when you feel like giving up.

Hope these tips are helpful for you. Remember, staying fit and healthy is a journey, not a destination. Be kind to yourself and celebrate every step you take. You can do it!
